On the 19th January, an unusual sighting of a humpback whale was recorded at Port of Boulogne in northern France. Two previous sightings of this animal were revealed and the animal was in fact first seen on the 30th December off the Nord-Pas de Calais in the Dover Straits. The whale was seen again on the 11th January at Sangatte. Observers from OCEAMM manage to take some photographs of the animal (see image).
It is unusual to see this species off northern France in fact this is just the third sighting in ten years. The first animal was recorded in 2006 in Dunkerque which sadly later stranded on the Belgian coastline. A mother and calf pair was spotted in 2008.
