Whilst doing a watch from Burghead, Moray Alan Airey, SWF Regional Coordinator for the southern Moray Firth and north Grampian, counted more than 80 bottlenose dolphins passing east. They occurred in groups of fours, sixes and eights and the entire encounter lasted over an hour. One of the dolphins was recognised as Fitri, a member of the resident Moray Firth population.
Little is known about the range movements or migration patterns of bottlenose dolphins in the UK but the Moray Firth population is known to experience seasonal fluctuations, with numbers of sightings thought to be significantly reduced in winter months. This movement may be due to changes in currents or fish distribution but it is yet to be confirmed.
The dolphins were later seen passing by Lossiemouth, further east along the southern Moray Firth by regular observer Margaret Sharpe.
