Sea Watch Regional Coordinator, Coli Bird had an exciting day yesterday. It all started when he got a call from fellow observer, Karen Munro about two humpback whales.
I was conducting a watch at Swiney Hill when I received the call from Karen Munro saying that the Thurso Life boat had spotted two Humpback Whales heading West at 11am. The whales in all probability had come through the Pentland Firth from the North Sea. I raced back home to get the car and set off to try and intercept them at Strathy Point which was about 10 miles to the West of their first sighting.
Karen tried Holborn Head first without success so went to Ushat Head a few miles West of Thurso. Karen was the lucky one, spotting them from her second lookout spot several miles offshore. They must have been to far out to see by the time they made it past Strathy Point because I missed them altogether.
Many thanks to Colin and Karen for reporting this sighting!
