With National Whale and Dolphin Watch getting close, we are delighted to have received reports of large whales from all around the country in the last few days. Four large whales were reported north of Anglesey last weekend, another large whale was reported off Scarborough and just yesterday, Deny Kennedy spotted a total of four minke whales from his land-watch station in Abroath, Angus. Alan Airey also had minke whales off Burghead, Moray and Kevin Hepworth reported some from Collieston, Aberdeenshire.
Killer whales have been reported regularly off the North Coast of Scotland thanks to Colin Bird and his network of observers and we had a rather unexpected report of orca off Norfolk on 17th July.
There have also been some unusual sightings of dolphins. 30 white-beaked dolphins were seen yesterday from Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire by Kevin Hepworth and Kevin also saw a group of 20 white-beaked off Girdleness, Aberdeen the day before that. On the west coast of Scotland, Noel Hawkins has had an equally exciting couple of days. He spotted twenty Atlantic white-sided dolphins off Ullapool and a big group of 60 common dolphins on the 24th.
All in all, it has been a fantastic few days of sightings. Of course, we are all hoping for this to continue throughout the weekend for our National Whale and Dolphin Watch! Don’t forget to keep your eyes on the sea and report any sightings that you may have. Whether it’s a harbour porpoise or a killer whale – we want to hear about it!!
