Regular observer, Deny Kennedy has just reported have spent three enjoyable hours watch a large solitary male killer whale off Arbroath. Deny regularly conducts land watches from this location and frequently reports bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises but this is his first killer whale!
He describes his sighting:
Then it began traveling up the coast taking around an hour and a half to cover 7-8km, staying around 2km out most of the time occasionally foraging. Last seen just to the south of Auchmithie just after 2pm. It was an easy animal to track, one clear blow every five minutes and then remaining stationary at the surface for 15-20 seconds breathing before diving again.
If you are in the area, why not head out tomorrow to see if you can spot this individual and don’t forget to report any sightings you have!
