It would seem that the humpback whales which were spotted off Hartlepool on Friday continued their northbound journey during the weekend. Regular observer, Deny Kennedy was lucky enough to spot four large whales off Arbroath on Sunday.
I saw three, possibly four, large cetaceans off Arbroath today from 13.30 onwards. They were moving north east up the coast 2.5 – 3km offshore. Travelling very slowly at around 2km per hour, barely breaking the surface every 9 – 10 minutes and blowing 3 or 4 times. They were swimming more or less in-line, the blow of the last animal was a lot less distinct than that of the two in front (which were very clear) and it was not obvious if this was one or two individuals.
Without a positive ID on these animals, we can’t be 100% sure that they are the Hartlepool humpbacks but it’s a possibility. Regardless, if you are north of Arbroath. there’s some big marine life on its way to you so keep your eyes peeled!!
