Surveys this weekend took place off Anglesey, and the team of Sea Watch staff and Bangor University students on board the Prince Madog were treated to some great dolphin sightings!
On Saturday a pod of 50 bottlenose dolphins were spotted off Moelfre, Anglesey. The team managed to get close enough to them to get some excellent photos for our photo I.D. catalogue.
On Sunday the survey team were very excited to see 3 Risso’s dolphins. Risso’s dolphins are quite easy to identify as they have distinctive scratches and scars on their body which deepen with age and result in overall lighter body colour – adult Risso’s dolphins may be entirely white in colour! More bottlenose dolphins made an appearance on Sunday too, with a pod of 100 seen around 8km off Puffin Island, Anglesey!
Here in New Quay the bottlenose dolphins have been regularly seen leaping around the bay, and one of our volunteers even managed to get a photograph of a dolphin with a fish in it’s mouth!
