A sperm whale was found on the beach at Burghead early hours of Sunday the 10th of December. The 40ft whale was reported to the Coast Guard by a member of the public. The postmortem examination found the whale to be in poor condition not having fed for a long time.
Unfortunately the lower jaw of the whale was stolen by a member of the public during the night, and the police are now investigating this. This whale may have been part of the group of nine sperm whales reported last month from Lossiemouth, which would mean that the other eight whales may also be at risk from stranding. There has been several recent strandings of dolphins and porpoises reported from the same area.
