Don’t think you’ll spot anything during your survey? Recording no animals is still important! By submitting the environmental data (called “effort data”), you are still directly contributing to citizen science, and building an image of where animals are (or are not) throughout the year!

Recording cetaceans while you are out on a walk or enjoying a boat trip seems like a fun idea in practice, but sometimes the associated paper work can be unwieldy and impractical in a hectic environment. This is where our new app comes in!
Sea Watch Foundation have launched a brand-new recording app, entitled “Sea Watcher” Download here on Android and Apple iOS.

The app allows for opportunistic sightings as well as dedicated surveys and is equipped to deal with both land and boat based data.
Sightings can be viewed on a map and there are a number of handy resources which will help identify what you’ve seen. In addition, there is a code of conduct for boat users, advice on photography, and details of what to do and who to contact if you find a stranded animal, either live or dead. It’s a great little pocket resource and an amazing opportunity to contribute to one of the longest running cetacean sightings networks in the world!

Why don’t you consider becoming a regular observer? This is the best and easiest way to get involved and directly contribute to our monitoring work. Anyone can take part, all you need is enthusiasm, a pair of binoculars and a little patience. If you spend time at sea or by the coast, or if you’re planning a trip to the seaside, take time to look around and record what you see – and what you don’t!
