Keen to get involved in combining citizen science and research? Find out how you can get involved below!
If you are eager to be out in nature and looking for marine animals, why not conduct an official survey! There are two main ways you can get involved with this.
- You can head out to your local coastline and start watching – it really is that simple! By downloading our app (click here for more information), you can perform a land or sea survey with ease.
- You can find your local regional coordinator and get in touch to see if there are any scheduled watches happening near you.
If you are eager to be out in nature and looking for marine animals, but don’t have time to conduct a survey, just record your sightings! There are 3 methods of doing this:
- Again, download our free Sea Watcher App. Here you can record casual sightings from anywhere in the world. No signal is required, but be sure to check that it has been submitted when you return to Wi-Fi. More information can be found here.
- Use our recording form online.
- Contacting us via email or phone! Get in touch with a detailed description of what you saw and when to sightings@seawatchfoundation.org.uk or 01407 832892
Here at Sea Watch Foundation, we host two main events in a year. These are open to the public to get involved, attend surveys and events, and meet like-minded people in the local area!
- Orca Watch – this is a week long event in the northern-most part of the UK, based in John o’ Groats. This, as the title suggests, was created as a dedicated time to assess the populations of killer whales around Scotland.
This event is open to applicants to become official volunteers, but the public can partake in watches and join some events too! - National Whale and Dolphin Watch – a 9-day event that occurs across the UK, our flagship citizen science event. Regional coordinators and the public organise and host watch events for anyone to get involved with. This is dedicated to creating a “snapshot” view of the species present in UK waters.
We hold online evenings of talks throughout the year and daily activities in our Education Center based in New Quay, Wales. Our Anglesey team also hold monthly land surveys that are free for the public to join! Check out their Facebook for updates.
If you would like to host an event, please get in touch to us at info@seawatchfoundation.org.uk
Each season (April to October) we take on a cohort of volunteers through internships or work experience.
- Internships – these are held at both our New Quay and Anglesey field offices, between the months of April to November. There are 4 main roles that are recruited: Research Intern, Research Assistant and Intern Coordinator, Education and Outreach Assistant, and National Whale and Dolphin Watch Assistant. Details of these roles can be found on their respective pages.
- Work experience – this is aimed at school children that are dedicated to kick-starting a career in marine conservation from a young age. We accept applicants from GCSE level upwards and placements may last between 3 days and 2 weeks.
- Projects – each year we create a list of projects for BSc or MSc students to be involved with. For this, please get in touch with our Director, Prof. Peter Evans, at peter.evans@bangor.ac.uk
As a charity we are very appreciative of donations and sponsorships. This support can appear in many forms
- Fundraising – host events or take part in challenges to support us.
- Membership – buying onto our membership scheme gives you exclusive insight into our sightings and magazines.
- Adopt a dolphin – protect these magnificent animals by adopting a Cardigan Bay dolphin for yourself or a loved one. Receive exclusive newsletters, dolphin tracking, adoption certificate and much more!
- Corporate partnerships – if you or your company want to provide continuous support to us, consider becoming an official partner of Sea Watch Foundation. Marine conservation is a powerful cause that aligns with ESG goals, speaking to environmentally conscious customers or employees.
